TOMB OF TERROR #15 (1954)
One of the most gruesome covers ever placed on a comic book, this image of a man's face literally disintegrating is the handiwork of Howard Nostrand, onetime assistant of the great Bob Powell. Interestingly, this issue appeared only one month (May '54) before the remarkably similar cover for Black Cat Mystery #50 (June '54), drawn by the aforementioned Powell for the same publisher, Harvey Comics! The Nostrand picture trumps Powell's by inclusion of a witness to the action, a desperately horrified woman (who the hell wouldn't be horrified by such an occurrence?) who cringes as pieces of flesh and skull splatter into her face. Yow!
